Dr. Wei Xu is an artist, mathematician and computer scientist. Based on math principles and computer graphics techniques, he invented an scientific way for observational drawing, aka, "Angle-Based Constructive (ABC) method". He is the author of "Drawing in the Digital Age -- an observational method for artists and animators" (Wiley 2012), and three other art books. A Korean magazine called him "The Modern Renaissance Man".
Dr. Xu is a San Diego Comic-Con panelist for 10 successive years in 2012-2021. He strongly advocates [+SM]Art -- adding Science and Math into Art. Dr. Xu is the cover person of "We Chinese in America" magazine in May 2014 for his innovative work in integrating science and art. He also provides volunteer services for the local community, including acting as a math coach at San Diego Math Circle. |
Little History about [+SM]Art
[+SM]Art is Dr. Xu's art research project started in 2004 when he was a faculty at The Art Institute of California - San Diego. The goal of [+SM]Art is to discover a new way to learn/teach fundamental drawing skills with the help of science and math. In 2009, Dr. Xu has successfully developed a set of new theory about how to control shapes based on geometry principles and computer graphics techniques. He has also turned the theory into a very practical method, aka, ABC method, for observational drawing. He then lectured his innovative method inside the Art Institute. In 2011, he started publishing his research results at various art conferences including InSEA/USSEA, NAEA and CAEA. Finally, in 2012 Dr. Xu put all his research results in his new book "Drawing in the Digital Age" (Wiley publishing), and the book was adopted by the Art Institutes as the textbook for Figure Drawing course for animation students. The book is available at bookstores and amazon.com. |
